Role and Expectations:
The Engineer IV brings a passion for building great products and features our education-focused users rave about. They thrive on the fast-paced cadence of delivering new features in a modern, trustworthy, and massively scalable SaaS application. They love application architecture, software practices, coding, and individual coaching equally. They view the success and growth of the product and their team members as a reflection of their passion, leadership, and knowledge.
This individual helps define the application architecture, patterns, and practices their team uses. They lead or participate in design sessions and other team meetings to help the team arrive at decisions quickly. They enjoy teaching others the craft of software development and use this as an opportunity to nurture the technical, communication, and leadership growth of the engineers they lead. They find constructive, even spirited, but always respectful debate about architectural patterns, engineering principles, and coding practices to be a valuable part of the learning and engineering process.
The Engineer IV takes pride in the solution they help design and build. They’re constantly looking for opportunities to improve its composition, maintainability, performance, scalability, quality, reliability, and affordability. They recognize that perfection of those attributes must be balanced with the organization’s business needs and vision. They help guide the team on a plan of evolution and continual improvement, balancing value delivery and time to market, as new features are being introduced.
This individual is hands-on with coding responsibilities each sprint. They showcase SOLID principles and other composition patterns through the code they author or help improve. They help prototype solutions to evaluate technology, toolkits, platforms, and practices the team needs to build a high-quality product at an efficient pace. They’re willing and actively seek to help others, address team velocity, or debug issues.
  • Collaborate with Director of Engineering and Cloud Architect on the platform architectural vision.
  • Collaborate with architecture, quality, and engineering leads to establish and refine engineering principles and practices.
  • Continuously seek excellence and improve engineering team autonomy, knowledge, quality, and velocity through training and coaching.
  • Guide the engineering team in quickly defining the technical design and specifications of application features, including testing, deployment, performance, scalability, security, monitoring, and cost.
  • Ensure the engineering team execution follows the prescribed practices and design during feature implementation.
  • Participate in team sprint ceremonies, department quarterly planning ceremonies, code reviews, and the architectural advice process.
  • Complete team sprint work, including prototyping, coding features, debugging, or addressing technical debt.
  • Manage direct reports and help guide their professional development.
Skills and Experience:
  • Strong experience building, deploying, and supporting reliable, scalable, and secure web applications and APIs. SaaS solution running on a cloud platform (Azure, AWS, GCP) is a plus.
  • Strong coding experience with C# and .NET/.NET Core. Angular, TypeScript, HTML, and JavaScript are a plus.
  • Awareness of building accessible user experiences.
  • Awareness of CI/CD practices, including experience building pipelines to deploy infrastructure and code.
  • Awareness and understanding of design patterns and practices.
  • Awareness and experience using code quality metrics as a tool for detecting code smells.
  • Awareness and understanding of secure development practices. Compliance is a plus.
  • Ability to support business case justification using business scenario modeling and perform benefit analysis.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to have conversations with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Experience managing and leading a team of five to eight engineers with the ability to be a trusted advisor while setting clear expectations and direction.
  • Experience executing within an agile organization. SAFe is a plus.
  • B.S. in CPSC, CIS, Engineering, or related experience.
